About Poletto
Poletto's storage facility near Venice, Italy
Poletto is a tanner located in the town of Arzignano, about an hour drive from Venice, in northern Italy. Since its founding in 1993, Poletto has developed leather for upholstery, handbags, footwear, and aviation.
The company overviews everything from the selection of raw hides to the final finishing and always strives to ensure stable production of leather despite it being a natural byproduct. In the recent years Poletto has introduced a line of new items where they keep over 1,000 colors in stock to enable fast delivery.
Double Face Leather
Polletto has a patent for double face (reversible) finishing where they spray special pigments on the back of leather and they can apply this technique to any leather in their stock to make it a double face leather.
Torello is cow leather with pebble grain-like emboss on top and is Poletto's one of top selling items. Once they apply the double face finish on Torello, it becomes Torello Double.
The finishing process of making Trello and Trello Double begins by letting dyed crusts go through a long spray machine. This spray machine is 60 meters (approx. 200 ft) long and leather passes through it on a conveyor belt while being sprayed with pigments many times. By applying layers of thin pigments, the leather can be evenly colored but still maintains its natural look and texture. After the leather is colored and dried, it then gets embossed to finally become Torello.
To transform Torello into Torello Double, the leather is again put in the spray machine but this time with the flesh side facing up. Poletto then uses their special pigments to completely cover the suede. Usually tanners avoid spraying flesh sides because it can get the grain sides dirty. To prevent it the spraying machine and the conveyor belt need to be thoroughly cleaned which is both costly and time consuming. Poletto also uses their secret technique of cleaning the spraying machine which enables them to produce double face leather with speed but without damaging the grain sides.
For the last step Poletto applies embossing on the flesh side with the same pattern as the grain side and Torello finally becomes Torello Double - the true double face leather where you can treat the flesh side in the same way as the grain side.
Trello Double and a product made with it.
Normally double face leather is made by using two pieces of leather and gluing their flesh sides together but this inevitably makes the leather stiff and heavy. On the other hand Pollet's double face leather is made from a single piece of leather, so you can make final products without lining while taking advantage of the leather's softness and lightness. The flesh side of Poletto's double face leather is quite durable so it can be used to make any of your imagination come to life - from small leather accessories to large tote bags.
